NATIONAL WOMENS HEALTH WEEK

NATIONAL WOMENS HEALTH WEEK

- Governors First Conference on Womens Health -

Mothers Day kicks off the 2006 National Womens Health Week Celebration. To celebrate National Womens Health Week , I will be attending and presenting at the Florida Governors First Conference on Womens Health later this week. I will be doing a presentation discussing diabetes in women and how diabetes and its risk factors affect women at all the different stages in their lives.

National Womens Health Week promotes awareness about key health issues women share and highlights convenient steps to maintain health and well-being. National Womens Health Week is the perfect time to establish life-long healthy habits and encourage all women to proactively maintain their health by consistently scheduling check-ups with their primary health care provider, in addition to adding a physical activity, such as walking, to their daily routines.

This week also reminds women of the importance of incorporating simple preventative health behaviors into every day routines. This campaign is nationally coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Womens Health.

Since prevention is the number one way to avoid common health problems, National Womens Check-Up Day, May 15th, encourages women to visit health care professionals to receive preventive exams and screenings, including check-ups for heart disease, diabetes, cancer and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Maintaining a regular check-up schedule is one of the five healthy habits that can contribute to enhancing a women’s health. Other measures include routine exercise, a healthy diet, not smoking and following general safety rules.

To celebrate Womens Health, the Florida Department of Health will host the first Governors Conference on Womens Health in Orlando on May 18-19, 2006. This two-day conference has been designed to provide relative information on the health issues affecting Florida women and to ascertain information from womens health stakeholders – both of which are vital to the development of a statewide plan on womens health.
