HONG KONG -- A respiratory disease expert said a 32-year-old man in a southern China province has been confirmed to have died of the deadly strain of bird flu.

Meantime, the World Health Organization is warning of the possibility of more human cases. The man, who lived less than a two-hour train ride from Hong Kong, developed fever and pneumonia and died March 2.

The man's girlfriend is sick but shows no bird flu symptoms, while a dozen other people who had come into close contact with him have shown no symptoms.

A spokeswoman for the World Health Organization's China office said she has not received confirmation of the case from China's Health Ministry but warns that there could be more human cases anywhere in China.

Elsewhere, Poland has reported its first-ever cases in birds.
